Surrounded by sand bottom lakes, it is home to Lake Butler, the largest, in the west, Lake Down in the east, and Lake Bessie in the southeast. By means of a system of canals, Butler, Down and six other lakes are connected to form what is known as the Butler Chain.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2006 estimates, the town had a population of 2,019. It is an important part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area.
